Laws Are Not Always Needed

On July 3, 2011 there was a motorcyclists' rally in New York state to oppose helmet laws. Of course none of the riders was wearing a helmet.

As fate would have it, there was an incident where one of the riders, 55 years old, was thrown off his bike when he skidded. He hit his head and died from the fall. According to the police he would have survived with a helmet.

Helmet laws should not be needed for motorcycles. It should be common sense. Most of these bikers give meticulous care to their bikes. Why not to their heads?

Safety is too often viewed as a program or a process. Laws make it adversarial. Safety should be a condition of life that is as natural as breathing.
